Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer network that allows users to make transactions directly with other users without a need for central authority or bank. Bitcoin is the first cyrptocurrency, and paved the way for the thousands of altcoins today. Transacitons on the Bitcoin network are recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain.
Bitcoin.org was registered on August 18, 2008 and was the first mention of Bitcoin found. In November 2008, on a cryptography mailing list, a link to a paper, Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System was posted by author Satoshi Nakamoto. Two months later, Satoshi released his Bitcoin program described in the paper in January 2009. It was released as open-source software on SourceForge, and a few days later, Satoshi mined the first bitcoin block, called the genesis block. Satoshi sent the first transaction on the Bitcoin network to programmer Hal Finney.
